So many things have happened in the Nicholas Lab Over the Summer. So let’s catch everyone up.

Funding – Congratulations to Naveena Ujagar who was awarded a Diversity Supplement through NICHD! Congrats to the Nicholas lab who was awarded A New Innovator Award (DP2) through NIH NIAID worth $1.5 million! We’re ready to do some amazing science.

New Lab Members – Welcome our newest graduate student Zena del Mundo and our two rotation students, Miranda Lopez and Julio Angulo. Welcome Gabby Sanchez, our postdoc and Trupti Sriram, undergraduate researcher and clinical coordinator. The Nicholas lab is so excited for the newest members of our team and look forward to some exciting science.

Parties – The Nicholas Lab turned 1 year old on July 1. Thank you to those of you who celebrated with us. Thank you to all of my mentors and the support from colleagues at UCI. The Nicholas lab wouldnt be here without the support. As my student says “It takes a village to raise a scientist”.

Projects – Over the summer some cool projects got launched. Our HANDLS collaboration to study diet’s influence on type 2 diabetes was approved! We also have our IRB protocol to recruit type 2 diabetes patients has been approved. Our lab manager and undergrad partner in crime created a double transgenic mouse to knock out GLUT1 in gondatropes. There is sooo much more happening. Stay tuned and happy fall!
